Totally redesigned in 1965 the Impala set an all-time industry annual sales record with more than 1 million units sold in the U.S. The "X-Frame" which was introduced in 1958 was dropped in favor of a "Full-Perimeter" frame with reinstated side rails. This full frame allowed better support for the larger '65 body. The body of the '65 Impala featured curved and frameless side glass, a sharper angled windshield, redesigned vent glass and a redesigned full-coil suspension. The new '65 Impala sport coupes featured a semi-fastback roofline and rear window. With the introduction of the '65 Caprice the Impala lost its claim to top-of-line full size Chevrolet. In mid-year production the 409 W block engine was dropped in favor of the new Mark IV 396ci engine. The wheelbase of the '65 Impala remained 119 inches.
